The beauty of Montauk is that you can be as active—or not—as you want to be. There’s great hiking, surfing, sailing, fishing and workout options, but there are also countless ways to unwind and enjoy a slower pace.
TAKE A HIKE
Montauk is home to over 5,000 acres of parks and beaches prime for leisurely walks or more strenuous hikes. Pick up suggestions and maps from the front desk and head to Hither Hills State Park, Montauk Point State Park, or the Montauk Lighthouse, the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country, built in 1796. Two favorite trails near the lighthouse include Money Pond Trail, where Captain Kidd is said to have buried treasure, and Seal Halout Hike.
HIT THE WATER
Some of the best surfing on the United States’ East Coast can be found in Montauk, thanks to its location on the wild Atlantic amid multiple breaks. The world-famous Terrace surf break is located directly in front of marram. Down the beach, there’s Ditch Plains, which is beloved for its consistent waves, Camp Hero, which requires some scrambling to get to, and Turtle Cove, near the lighthouse. Learn to surf with the Engstrom family of professional surfers who offer lessons for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
SAIL AT SUNSET
